Things to consider when choosing a Pet Sitter
Choosing the right pet sitter for your Italian Greyhound is crucial to ensure your pet’s well-being and your peace of mind. Here are some tips to help you find the perfect pet sitter:
Experience with Italian Greyhounds:
Look for a pet sitter with specific experience caring for Italian Greyhounds or similar breeds. These dogs have unique characteristics and needs, so someone familiar with their traits will be better equipped to handle them.
References and Reviews:
Ask for references from previous clients or check online reviews. Hearing about other people’s experiences with a pet sitter can give you valuable insights into their reliability and the quality of care they provide.
Professionalism:
Choose a pet sitter who demonstrates professionalism in their communication and interactions. Clear and prompt communication is essential to ensure you stay informed about your Iggy’s well-being while you’re away.
Meet and Greet:
Schedule a meet and greet before making any commitments. This allows you to observe how the pet sitter interacts with your Iggy and gives your Italian Greyhound a chance to get familiar with them. Trust your instincts and assess whether there is a good connection between the sitter and your pet.
Ask Questions:
Prepare a list of questions to ask potential pet sitters. Inquire about their experience, daily routine, emergency procedures, and how they handle specific situations. A responsible pet sitter should be willing to address all your concerns.
Pet First Aid/CPR Certification:
Check if the pet sitter is certified in pet first aid and CPR. This knowledge can be crucial in case of emergencies, ensuring that your Italian Greyhound receives immediate and appropriate care.
Reliability and Availability:
Ensure the pet sitter is reliable and available during the times you need them. Discuss your expectations regarding the frequency and duration of visits, and make sure they can accommodate your schedule.
Security Measures:
Inquire about the security measures the pet sitter takes, such as double-checking doors and windows, ensuring your dog’s safety during walks, and keeping your home secure. This is important for the Italian Greyhound breed as you want to know there is no way that your Iggy can escape the pet sitters yard or home.
Walks and Off-lead:
It is important that your Iggy has a daily walk and as a result the rules around off-leads should be clear to your Pet Sitter. Even though you may feel that your Iggy has good recall you should not allow your Pet Sitter to walk your Iggy off-lead, ever. Your experience with your Iggy and the experience a stranger has will be completely different. So make it clear that all walks are on lead, and only on lead. Even if there is a chance your Iggy will not be walked, err on the side of caution and make this point very very clear!
Treats and Feeding:
It is best to adhere as close to your feeding requirements as possible. We’d suggest writing these instructions down and handing them to your pet sitter. This ensures that you will not have to deal with upset stomachs or visits to a vet because the sitter chose to provide a treat that your Iggy has a reaction too. The easiest option here is to provide all the food and treats needed for their stay with your pet sitter. This will ensure there are not surprises on their return to you.
Return Inspection:
It is important that when you collect your Iggy from the pet sitter that you closely inspect your Iggy looking for rashes, cuts or bruises. This inspection is not to find blame with the pet sitter, but rather to ensure if there are issues you can address them while at the sitting location. For example if your Iggy has a rash it is easier to find the cause while at the location, than it will be to deal with this via phone call or messages. Any professional pet sitter will accommodate this requirement so you have peace of mind that you have all the information you need.
Trial Period:
Consider a trial period before committing to a long-term arrangement. This allows you to evaluate how well the pet sitter and your Italian Greyhound get along and whether they meet your expectations.
By taking the time to carefully select a pet sitter, you can ensure that your Italian Greyhound receives the best care possible in your absence.
